Refunds and Returns

This page sets out when you can return something you bought from JP Used Motors and Machinery, and how refunds work. It sits alongside your rights under the Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008. Nothing here takes those rights away. Last updated 2 September 2026.

Used goods, sold as tested

Everything we sell is used or reconditioned, and it is sold on that basis. We test each unit before listing it and we describe honestly what we found. A used engine is not a new engine and it will show wear consistent with its age and mileage. That is reflected in the price.

Before you buy: confirm the code

Send us the number stamped on your block, casing or nameplate and we will confirm in writing whether the unit fits your application. This is free, it takes minutes, and it is the single thing that prevents almost every return we ever deal with.

If we sent the wrong unit

If we confirmed a code in writing and the unit we sent does not match it, that is our error. Contact us within 7 days of delivery. We will collect the unit at our cost and either replace it with the correct one or refund you in full, including the original delivery charge.

If the code you gave us was wrong

If the unit matches what was confirmed but turns out to be wrong for your vehicle or machine, we will do what we can to swap it for the correct unit where we have one in stock. Return freight and outbound freight on the replacement are for your account, and the unit must come back unfitted, undamaged and complete.

Units that have been fitted or stripped

Once a unit has been fitted, partially fitted, stripped, machined, painted or modified in any way, it cannot be returned for a change of mind. If you suspect a fault, contact us before stripping anything so we can talk it through. Stripping a unit without telling us first will usually end a warranty claim.

Faulty units inside the warranty period

Tested mechanical units carry a 3 month warranty from delivery or collection. Workshop machinery carries 30 days functional cover. If a unit fails inside that period through no fault of fitment or operation, contact us with your invoice number and the fitting job card. We will replace it with an equivalent tested unit where we have one, or refund the purchase price where we do not.

We do not cover labour, towing, downtime, hired replacements or any other consequential loss. Full warranty terms are on our delivery and warranty page.

What is never covered

  • Damage from overheating, oil starvation, incorrect timing or incorrect fitment.
  • Consumables such as belts, gaskets, seals, filters, clutch components and fluids.
  • Units fitted without replacing torque-to-yield head bolts, timing components or specified fluids.
  • Turbos, injectors, sensors and ancillaries unless they were bought separately as tested items.
  • Normal wear consistent with a used part of that age and mileage.

How to start a return or claim

  1. Phone or WhatsApp 063 576 3538, or email jpusedmotorsandmachinery@gmail.com.
  2. Give us your invoice number, the SKU on the unit and a description of the problem.
  3. Send photographs, and the fitting job card if the unit was fitted.
  4. Do not strip or return anything until we have confirmed the return with you in writing.

Refund timing

Approved refunds are paid by EFT to the account the payment came from, normally within 7 working days of the unit being received back and inspected at our Durban yard.
